The Art of Curation: Why Leaders Must Curate, Not Dilute

Paul Spiers Leadership, Culture & Curiosity in the Age of AI

In an age dominated by algorithms and instant access to information, leaders face a pivotal choice: to curate or to dilute. This is not merely a philosophical musing—it is a clarion call for those who wish to lead with intention and clarity.

We hold in our hands the most powerful curation tool for our ideas, innovations, and curiosity in the history of humankind—the mobile phone. Yet, far too often, rather than using our devices as tools for curation, we allow them to become instruments of dilution. We 'swipe and wipe' for hours, passively allowing algorithms to do our thinking and curating for us. This is an extraordinary waste of an extraordinary tool.

At The New P&L Institute, we explore this dichotomy in depth. In my keynote, "Are We Outsourcing Our Curiosity to an Algorithm?", I delve into the impact algorithms have on our ability to think creatively, critically, and analytically—the very components that underpin innovation.

If we start to dilute our curiosity, those curious and creative muscles, if not consciously and consistently exercised, will atrophy. Our ability to grow, evolve, understand, learn, compete, and succeed all begins with engaging our curiosity, then curating it. Leaders must resist the temptation to let technology think for them and instead harness it to capture and curate the best of their ideas.

I remember when curation was a cumbersome affair—a notebook for jotting down ideas, a camera with film that took a week to develop, perhaps a rudimentary audio recorder. Today, with a touch, we can capture ideas in an instant. Yet, who is using whom? Are we mastering technology, or is it mastering us?

Great leaders understand the difference. They actively curate ideas, insights, and innovations. They foster environments where curiosity is not just encouraged but expected. They recognize that the true potential of innovation lies in consistent, active engagement with one's curiosity.

If you are interested in learning more about how you and your team can reengage your curiosity and reignite your innovation, I invite you to explore The New P&L Podcast—available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts.
